Domestic and International Historical Events Influencing Bioethics: In a Social Minority Perspective
Kim Seong-Jae
Abstract
This review discusses three historical events in bioethics. The first case is the ¡°Tuskegee Syphilis Study,¡± which took place from 1932 to 1972. In this study, black men were not provided with proper treatment for syphilis and were not informed about the true purpose of the experiment or their illness. This raised ethical concerns as it violated the participants¡¯ right to life. The second case is the ¡°Chester Southam¡¯s cancer scandal,¡± which began in 1954. In this study, patients with cancer and prison inmates were used as research subjects, with non-cancer inmates serving as controls. This raised ethical issues due to the lack of informed consent from the participants. The last case is the ¡°Hwang Woo-suk Scandal¡± in Korean. It is well-known for the unethical use of women¡¯s eggs in research and the fabrication of papers. This case involved targeting socially undrprivileged women and resulted in harm to their right to life and dignity. In conclusions, these cases highlight ethical problems in biomedical reearch and the violation of participants¡¯ rights. They have contributed to raising awareness and promoting changes in the field of bioethics.
